Global epidemiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ON THIS TOPIC
Global systematic reviews of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) epidemiology exist, but evolving demographic patterns and updated diagnostic criteria necessitate updated disease burden estimates.
This study provides updated pooled global estimates of ALS incidence, prevalence and mortality and confirms substantial heterogeneity in ALS disease burden across demographic, temporal, geographical and socioeconomic dimensions.
These findings highlight multifaceted disease disparities attributable to genetic, environmental and socioeconomic factors, supporting healthcare policy making, optimised resource allocation and ongoing ALS research.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterised by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, resulting from the degeneration of motor neurons in the cerebral cortex, brainstem and spinal cord.1 2 ALS is the most prevalent motor neuron disease...
